Starting this Tuesday, Detran.RJ has begun the free issuance of the new National Identity Card (CIN) for all ages, aimed at making fraud more difficult. The CIN uses the CPF as the sole identification number, replacing the traditional RG number.
To obtain the new CIN, citizens must present their birth or marriage certificate and their CPF registration number. If they do not have a CPF, they can obtain one through the Federal Revenue website or at affiliated units such as Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, Correios, and civil registry offices. Since January 2023, Detran.RJ has been issuing the document in stages by age group, having already produced 659,283 cards in the state.
The president of Detran.RJ, Glaucio Paz, emphasized the security of the new model, which uses international passport encoding (MRZ) to reduce the risk of fraud. The CIN has a QR Code that allows for the verification of the document’s authenticity and identifies if it has been stolen, cloned, or lost. “From now on, users of all ages will be able to request the new identification document, which prevents duplicate registrations and makes fraud more difficult,” Paz stated. Additionally, the CIN contains graphic elements that hinder counterfeiting and can be used as a travel document, being readable at self-service terminals in airports.
The new CIN will not be mandatory until February 2032, when the old RG will cease to be valid. Individuals aged 60 and over will have the option not to change their document. The main change with the CIN is the adoption of the CPF as the only identification number in public service databases. The RG number will not appear on the new document. The QR Code on the back of the CIN serves as an additional security feature, making fraud more difficult and allowing for the digitalization of the card.
The issuance of the first copy of the CIN is free, while the second copy, if needed, costs R$ 51.18, the same price as the second copy of the traditional identity card.
The president of InterID, Célio Ribeiro, also highlighted the benefits of this initiative from Detran.RJ. “The implementation of the new CIN by Detran.RJ is a significant advancement in the modernization of identification documents in Brazil. This model not only increases security against fraud but also facilitates access to public services, making the issuance process more agile and efficient. The large number of cards already issued demonstrates the system’s capacity to meet the population’s demand quickly and effectively,” Ribeiro stated.
InterID supports this initiative from Detran.RJ, recognizing the importance of modernization and security in the identification process of citizens. The new CIN represents a significant advancement in the fight against fraud and in facilitating access to public services for the entire population.
