Four newborns, just a few days old, received their first identity cards this Wednesday (23). The babies are between 2 and 4 days old. According to Marcelo Mascarenhas, director of the Institute of Identification, these identity cards are the first in Brazil to include neonatal biometrics.
The babies’ identity cards are valid, and the four are now part of the national registry. However, the service will only begin to be implemented in state maternity hospitals starting in 2025. These four registrations were part of a test to confirm the quality of the equipment used to capture the babies’ fingerprints.
“This proof of concept demonstrates that the equipment we have is capable of collecting biometric data with the necessary quality,” explained Marcelo.
The four registrations were carried out with children born at Evangelina Rosa Maternity Hospital in Teresina. The goal is to install identification systems in all hospitals across the state where deliveries take place.
