The Civil Police of Goiás, through the Superintendence of Human Identification (SIH), held the Neonatal Identification Workshop Goiás on the morning of Friday (21). The event presented the pilot project for implementing newborn biometric data collection in maternity hospitals across the state of Goiás. Initially, the State Hospital and Maternity Nossa Senhora de Lourdes will serve as the test unit for the project’s effective implementation. In partnership with the State Department of Health, the Civil Police of Goiás aims to expand the initiative to all state maternity hospitals by October this year.
The Executive President of ABRID and Founder and CEO of InterID, Célio Ribeiro, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “An important action by the state of Goiás, implementing the biometric identification process for its newborns. An initiative that combats newborn abduction and child trafficking, while also granting citizenship to each child through the issuance of their National Identity Card (CIN) from their earliest days of life.”
The Neonatal Identification Goiás project consists of collecting biometric data from both the newborn and the mother in the delivery room, followed by a second collection at hospital discharge, ensuring the custody chain of the newborn’s biometric data. Additionally, babies will leave the maternity hospital with the request protocol for the National Identity Card, allowing access to various existing public services. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of mothers and babies, preventing mix-ups, thefts, and kidnappings of newborns.
The opening of the workshop was attended by the General Delegate of the Civil Police, André Ganga; the Superintendent of SIH/PCGO, Webert Leonardo Lopes; and fingerprint experts from the Civil Police.
