The Minister of Management, Esther Dweck, stated that the government wants to expedite the issuance of the National Identity Card, which unifies ID cards with a unique number, the CPF, aiming to reach 150 million issued cards by the end of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) term in 2026.
“The CIN is where it deserves to be. Our National Identity Card – CIN occupies its rightful place in the spotlight, being a topic of discussion at the meeting of President Lula, ministers, and governors. Whether in the context of digital transformation, public safety, or social inclusion, the CIN is our greatest instrument of citizenship,” emphasizes Célio Ribeiro, executive president of InterID.
Currently, this number is nearly 15 million, according to her. The previous goal was for the new identity card to reach all Brazilians only by 2031.
“Today, all states are issuing the cards. In 21 states, only the new card is issued, while six still have a hybrid situation,” she said at the meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and governors, held this afternoon to present the PEC on Public Safety.
The new National Identity Card (CIN) can already be obtained in 23 states and the Federal District.
The “New ID” will be the only identification document accepted for Brazilians within the national territory starting February 28, 2032. Until then, state-issued ID cards can still be used.
Where to issue the CIN?
The National Identity Card is issued by the states through their respective identification institutes, such as Poupatempo and police stations, just as is currently done.
What changes with the new document?
The new National Identity Card follows the provisions of Law No. 14,534/2023, signed by President Lula, which establishes the CPF as the unique identification number for citizens in public service databases. The document will be integrated nationally, as before, each citizen could have up to 27 different ID cards, one for each federative unit.
Until when do I need to issue the National Identity Card?
The old ID card is valid until February 28, 2032.
Will the new document be valid as a National Driver’s License?
The document may, upon request, include other document numbers, which can be verified through the reading of the QR code. In its digital format, the documents will be concentrated in the GOV.BR application. It should be noted that other documents will not be revoked; however, the new National Identity Card will be eligible to be the unique document in Brazil.
Will the document be printed?
